When my father died suddenly in 1996, I inherited a business and a vast network of relationships. I expected to find a handful of key figures. Instead, I found hundreds of people whose connection to him was sometimes just a single interview, yet who spoke of him as if he had left an imprint on their lives.

Lorsque mon père est décédé subitement en 1996, j’ai hérité d’une entreprise et d’un réseau de relations exceptionnel. Je m’attendais à trouver quelques personnes clés. Au lieu de cela, j’ai rencontré des centaines de personnes dont le lien avec lui se résumait parfois à un simple entretien, et pourtant elles parlaient de lui comme s’il avait profondément marqué leur vie.

Whether they landed the job or not, they remembered his presence, his attention, his care. In the year after his passing, I got to know my father in a way I never had – and two thoughts kept running through my mind: what an incredible man he was, and how I was ever going to fill those shoes.
